The Dells Mill

Augusta, Wisconsin
Still operated solely by water power, the old Dells Mill, located on Bridge Creek, four miles from Augusta, is now well along toward its one hundredth birthday.  Constructed in 1861, as a flour mill, it now has been converted largely to the milling of feeds, but operations are still carried on in the original building.

The property was acquired in 1894 by Frank Clark and is now operated by his two sons, Paul and Franklin who took charge in 1939. When the elder Clark purchased the plan, he gave it the name "Dells Milling Co.," by which it has been known ever since.

The main building remains just as it was constructed, its old timbers still showing the ax marks made when the logs were hand-hewn into timbers.  Some additions to the structure have been made in recent years, and the old log dam which served faithfully for many years has been replaced by a cement dam.  The dam holds back a 23 foot head of water, which forms a small lake which has long provided a fishing and recreation center for near by residents.

A water turbine supplies the mill with all its power, and is capable of generating 254 horse power at peak capacity.  The turine [sic] drives a main shaft to which all the mill machinery is connected.

Although some buckwheat flour is still made at the mill, no wheat flour has been manufactured there for some years.
