Thompson
Valley Cemetery, Otter Creek Township
Donated

HISTORY OF
THIS CEMETERY
(as prepared by C. C. Campbell and written by Marion [Chrysler]
Magnussen)
The area known as Thompson Valley is about seven miles long and extends
on either side of County Highway R (previously known as State Highway
27) between Osseo and Augusta to the woods and bluffs on its east and
west sides.
The
History of Thompson Valley,
written by Mary Elizabeth (Livermore) Crowe, granddaughter of Josephus
L. Livermore, one of the earliest settlers states, "The first settler
was a man of mystery. He was an old hermit named Andrew
Thompson.
He was living alone in a log cabin just northwest of where
the
Thompson Valley Cemetery is now located when the other first settlers
arrived."
Though little is known about Andrew Thompson, a valley, a cemetery, a
church and a school have perpetuated his name.
The first recorded death in the valley was that of Sabra Bennett in
1858. The Lorenzo and William Bennett families had come to
the
area previous to the settlement of Augusta in 1856.
Some say that Sabra Bennett and Andrew Thompson were buried under a
large oak tree on a knoll approximately eighty rods northwest of the
present cemetery and later moved. The records show that Sabra
Bennett is buried in Lot 63, purchased by L. Bennett, and that Andrew
Thompson is buried in Lot 64, also purchased by L. Bennett. A
simple rough sandstone headstone marks the grave of the man whom the
cemetery was named.
According to the information that we have been able to find, the
cemetery must have been laid out in 1862 or 1863, as there are no
ecords of other burials until this time.
The first recorded death and burial was Clarissa Emerson on April 26,
1863 in Lot 38, purchased by V. Emberson. This might have
been
Versel Emerson, a brother of John C. Emerson who came to Eau Claire
County in 1859 and purchased 80 acres of land in Otter Creek Township.
The second recorded death was that of Lyman Strader on February 2,
1864. Joseph and Maria (Hamilton) Strader with their
children,
Albert, Rosaline, Roxanna and Lyman, had come to Wisconsin from Lewis
Co., New York about 1856 and farmed 340 acres in the Thompson Valley
area. This is the family that took care of Andrew Thompson
when
he could no longer look after himself.
The third recorded death was Isabelle (Hawkins) Campbell on February
14, 1864. She married George W. Campbell on March 22, 1863,
and
they lived where now is a grove of trees between the farmer McCauley
and Chrysler farms. She died two months after the birth of a
son,
Frank. After her death, her husband who had come here from
Elmira, New York in 1856, enlisted in the K 36th Wisconsin Infantry and
died four months later on June 26, 1864. Their orphaned son,
Frank, was raised by his aunt, Mrs. Josephus F. LIvermore.
The fourth death on April 4, 1864 was William S. Silkworth, who we
believe was the son of George Silkworth who came here in about 1855
from Watertown, New York. He and his partner, Garwin Green,
had
entered a section of land and settled in Beef River Station, the only
stage station and hotel between Black River Falls and Eau Claire at
that time. He also served as postmaster for several years.
The death of Jessie Palm's baby son was recorded on September 23, 1864.
Harry and Amanda (Heard) Palms with their children, Jessie,
G.
H., Squire N. and William H. Palms, came from Oneida Co., New York by
way of Columbia and Adams counties in Wisconsin.
The first recorded annual cemetery meeting was held June 4, 1866 with
H. Heard, president; J. D. Densmore, secretary; and L. Bennett,
treasurer. A 10' x 30' lot cost $2.50 and digging a grave
cost
$1.50. If frost, it was $3.00.
On March 4, 1867, Isaac and Lucretia (Livermore) Bennett donated or
sold a tract of land 150 ft north and south, 300 ft. east and west with
exclusion of the highway (NE 1/4 of NE 1/4, Section 24, 25 - 7W).
A letter from Attorney M. B. Hubbard dated June 6, 1895
stated
that the above was not the correct description of the property.
The Cemetery Association was formed on Jun 22, 1875 with W. Edington,
J. O'Brian, George Yule, John McKinney, Levi S. Ketchum, Walter Green,
Thomas Cannon, Peter Berry, Ira Bennett, N. E. Pride and Orville Stone
among those present. It was decided that the Association
should
be called "The Thompson Valley Cemetery Association" with the annual
meeting to be held on Jun 20th of each year. The following
officers were elected: Peter H. O'Brian, 1 year; Levi S.
Ketchum,
2 years; N. E. Pride, 3 years; John McKinney, 4 years; Walter Green,
clerk for 1 year; Levi S. Ketchum, sexton for 1 year to receive $2.50
for grave digging; ad Orville Stone, treasurer for 1 year.
From 1906 to 1910 there must have been a women's liberation movement as
the board members were: Mrs. Henry Brown, president; Mrs. Ida
Jones, Secretary; Mrs. Levi Ketchum, treasurer; and Mrs. William Yule,
trustee. However, the work of the sexton was left to a man,
Raymond Ketchum.
Grave digging, like everything else gradually increased in price.
In 1913 it was $2.50; 1915, $3.50; from 1928 through 1940 it
gradually went from $8.00 to $50.00. In 1973 it was raised to
$60
and later to $70.
Originally each lot was assessed $2.00 and a notice was sent to each
family for the care of the lot. This was not satisfactory as
many
were paid for late, and the Cemetery Association was always short of
funds.
About 1931 the Perpetual Care Law was passed, and $50 was assessed each
estate for cemetery care. This was later raised to $100 for
each
estate. There are 102 lots under perpetual care, the majority
of
which came under the $50 rate. There are 63 lots for which no
perpetual care has been paid, but all have to be cared for and mowed.
At one point the cost of each mowing was $70.
The Cemetery Board can only use the interest from the perpetual fund
for mowing and maintenance. In case a major improvement is
necessary, the board must receive permission from the county judge.
In 1923, a strip of land of approximately one acre was purchased from
Charles Pettis and added to the north side of the cemetery.
At
that time a new fence was built. Brick and concrete posts and
new
gates were put across the front. Evergreen trees were planted
on
the east, south and north sides of the cemetery. This work
was
under the supervision of Jack Edington, chairman; C. R. McCauley,
treasurer; and Rollo Strader, secretary.
The first burial permit was issued in 1932.
The oldest person to be buried in the Thompson Valley Cemetery was
"Aunt Nancy" O'Brien who lived to be almost 106 years old.
She
was the aunt of Luther, Levi and Maranda (Ketchum) Chrysler.
Her
husband, John, was a brother of Nancy (O'Brien) Chrysler, Adeline
(O'Brien) Yule and Peter H. O'Brien. This made her the "aunt"
of
a great many people in the area. This family group came from
Broome Co., New York by way of Columbia Co., Wisconsin.
A walk through the cemetery reveals the heartaches suffered by the
early settlers with the high infant mortality and the tragic toll of
then uncontrollable diseases. Nearly every family lost one
child
and some lost as many as three children in a period of two weeks.
The following is an alphabetical compilation of burials of the Thompson
Valley Cemetery, donated by Aubrey (Arries) Wittren and Nance (Wittren)
Sampson, and includes burial locations by Lot and Stall number.
